あらすじ ＃24 「壬氏と猫猫」
猫猫に負けて、緑青館の妓女を身請けすることになった羅漢。
華やかな女たちが並ぶ中、羅漢が梅梅の手を取ろうとした時、彼女が開けた扉から歌声が聞こえてきて……。
一方、壬氏の家に呼ばれた猫猫は、羅漢の悩みと猫猫に執着する理由、そして父親に対する複雑な感情を語る。それから数日後の夜、城壁の上で美しく舞う猫猫の姿があった。

おばあちゃんは怒ってたんだよ。彼女にとって羅漢は、妊娠中の鳳仙とその未来の子を捨てたクズだったからな。おばあちゃんはその後、売春宿を引き継いだ後も3年間鳳仙と子供の面倒を見てたんだ。遊び人に騙されて自殺した花魁のエピソードは、純潔を保つことがいくつかの花魁にとってどれほど大切かを示している。鳳仙もその一人だ。
鳳仙自身、羅漢に騙されたと思ってた。だから、呪いとして彼と猫猫の指を送ったんだ。彼女は、羅漢がただのセックスのために彼女を騙して消えたと思ってた。羅漢は3年間姿を消してた。関わった全員が彼を最低だと思ってた、おそらく羅門もだ。なぜなら、羅門はマオマオの育成で羅漢の怠慢を補う必要があったからな。
責任は完全に羅漢にある。彼は父親に逆らうだけの背骨を持っていなかったからだ。彼は猫猫がまだ生きていることに気づいてやっと目を覚ました。そしてついに父親をその地位から引きずり下ろし、一族の頭としての地位を引き継ぎ、父親とお気に入りの弟を追放し、弟の息子を引き取ったんだ。

Granny was seething because to her, Lakan was a piece of shit that abandoned a pregnant Fengxian and their unborn child, who she took care of for 3 years after taking over the brothel. The episode where the courtesan killed herself because she got duped by a player showed how important maintaining purity was for some of the courtesans, Fengxian is one such courtesan.
Fengxian herself thought she was duped by Lakan, which is why she sent her and Maomaos fingers as a curse to him. She thought he tricked her for sex and disappeared. Lakan was gone for 3 years, everyone involved thought he was a scumbag, maybe even Loumen too since he had to pick up his slack in raising Maomao.
The blame is purely on Lakan because he couldn’t defy his father since he didn’t have a back bone. He only found it once he realized Maomao was still alive so he finally pulled his head out of his ass, usurped his father out of his position and taking it over as head of the clan, banished father and his favored brother, and took his brothers son.

羅漢が3年間姿を消したからって、鳳仙が梅毒でどん底まで落ちるわけないよ。あいつ、間違いなく緑青館に何度もしつこく連絡してたはずだ。手紙を書いたりとかしてさ。最低でも鳳仙がどこにいるのか知って、墓参りぐらいはしたかっただろうし。
やり手婆がもうちょっと頭がキレてたら、羅漢を試すために「鳳仙はまだ生きてるけど、治療不可能な深刻な性病にかかってるんだ」と言ってみて、羅漢がどんなリアクションをするか観察してたろうに。
I’m sure Lakan’s absence of 3 years is not enough for Fengxian’s mental state to deteriorate from syphilis. He must have pestered the Verdigris House many times, write letters etc. if only to ask where Fengxian is buried so he could pay prosper respects.
If the old hag had been a sensible person, she would have tested Lakan by telling him that she was alive but infected with a deadly, incurable STD and see how he reacts.
